The Closet clean-out

“I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. John 15: 1 - 2

This past weekend I finally did my closet clean-out that I had put off for a while. I needed to go through my wardrobe to get rid of some old items and make some space in the closet. This is something I do periodically; well I plan to do periodically is more accurate expression, but things don’t always go as planned😊. The process while not fun, after all it is still a chore, is usually an interesting. Interesting because of all sorts of ‘finds’ like empty perfume bottles that are reminders of past happy moments; that scarf which was presumed missing; the dress still hoping to be worn one day even though it has been 3 years; long forgotten items that are just happy to come out of the closet even for a min.

As I was looking through and making the ‘all-important’ decision on what to keep, what to trash and what to store away for future, I felt a nudge in my spirit that I also need to do this clean-out for my life. As children of God, there is a need to submit our hearts to God for clean-out regularly. The Bible tells us that pruning enables us to bear more fruits, the Father prunes every tree that bears fruit (John 15:2). Pruning is not fun, just by dictionary definition it involves cutting away from the tree but only by pruning do we make space for growth and are able to bear more fruit.

Prune: trim (a tree, shrub, or bush) by cutting away dead or overgrown branches or stems, especially to encourage growth”.
How often do we examine our heart? How open are we to letting God prune those dead or overgrown branches in our lives? Or do we still want to hold on to things that we need to let go? Things that hinder us from bearing more fruit.  It is time to let go. We periodically need a spiritual closet clean-out to get rid of all those things that are occupying space in our hearts but are no longer useful. We need to ask the Holy Spirit to help us identify the clutter in our lives;
  •     Those empty perfume bottles (The ‘brook’ that has dried up but we still want to stay there when God is saying move on. It has served its purpose, it’s time to move!),
  •     Long forgotten items (dream & vision that God had placed in your heart but you thought are dead & impossible and we have stopped working on. Start again!).
  •        It is time to let go of that dress, it belongs to your past (that hindering relationship that we find difficult to let go or the bitterness that you still holding unto from hurts in previous relationships. Let it go!),
  •        The scarf which was presumed missing (gifts that you need to develop and impact the world with. It is still there, you just invest it).

Holy Spirit will guide us to all truth in this season in Jesus name.
Remain blessed
